Today I am celebrating my 30th year of martial arts ( that's from the time I got serious and started teaching).

I can tell you it's not about the car you drive or the size of or house, not even the money you make!

It's how you live and the kind of people you have around you....and to top it all off working a job that does not feel like a job to me is priceless. Helping people achieve their dreams while I live mine...each and everyday.

Wow it's been a while a while since my last blog...with so much face booking it's been neglected, my apologies.

Whitney Houston passed away this week and truly a wasted talent. I went to a Rod Stewart concert the other night and he is well into his 60's.

I could not help but marvel at the sell out crowd and at how much fun he was having, he was in great shape and shared his stage appearance with his family. Still rocking and still enjoying life!

In martial arts I have some great role models....Ernie Reyes Snr in his mid 60's and still in amazing shape,check out Joon Rhee doing a workout who is into his 80's and it's WOW.

Many people ask me about success and I have to say real success is long lasting and as I am about to turn 47 I am so grateful that I can enjoy each and everyday with some fantastic people in an industry I love so much...the martial arts.

I had an absolutely great weekend!

Yes I was pleased that Corey "Major" Nelson won his 10th MMA bout. Although I am so very happy for Corey's well deserved result it is about much much more.

We had a great support team that included Shabe Kafo,Richard Sargeant,Grant Jones,our official strapper was even there Ms Kathryn and the man Brian Ebersole!

How did we celebrate? well it was in the early hours of the morning we ended up sitting in a great cafe called " Chappelli's" shared a great meal and simply chatted about people and about KMA. It was unusual how we ended up on this line of praising and we celebrated not just the win but how we are all surrounded by great people and training to win in the game of life.

Our lives could have turned out so differently without the martial arts, but hey here we are!

Life is more than good, its great simply because we made the right choices!

Train to Never Quit!

I had a chance to meet up with Master Reyes,he certainly is a shining example of "training to nevder quit".

So why bother going to 7th dan?

As well as challenging myself I have to sincerely say its all about my students. There is nothing I ask of them that I would not do myself and that includes training and working towards my next level.

Is it about the belt?

Certainly not,its about sharpening the sword,its about constant and never ending improvement,its about growth and inspiration which quite frankly cannot be shown by simply wearing a belt.

Last but not least its about the training, I aim for my students and my industry peers to see and know I am active and always working.Winning respect and self respect is everything to me. Its almost 30 years in the making so its something that did not happen over night.....infact as I reflect I am amazed at all the things I have been through and how quickly it has gone.

Now its time to enjoy that wonderful view from the top of the mountain and live the martial arts for life!

Recently there have been deaths fairly close to our family,I have seen people become victims of fraud to the tune of $500,000 and I have been through a tax audit....but life is good.

Fact is there is no life without problems but as they say it's all about how you handle them!

Many would place money before their health ,then at the moment when death is near then they would readily sacrifice all their wealth and belongings in exchange for life.

The moral of the story.....value your life and health when you have it and do all to protect and maintain it.When in the best of health you have the freedom of choice, sadly it's not appreciated by many until their choices are taken away from them.

Money ,houses and cars can all be replaced....value life and remember everyday above ground is a great day.
Life is good,it's very good.

No truer words have been spoken!

The martial arts industry is filled with some great people,its also filled with some arrogence as a result of their level of black belt or their fighting record.Who cares!

I dont care if you can kick my butt or if you have never had a fight at all,everyone deserves respect.

Why would you want to spend time with or worse still spend money on such people!

Filling your life with the right kind of people is essential,me I am very protective of that to ensure I peaceful and stress free life.Dont make the grade,its simple just ignore and isolate those that want to drain your energy like blood sucking vampires.

This is my first line of self defence,saying "No" to those vampires.

Love life,love martial arts!

These were just some of so many comments,I have not been perfect but as I grow older my responsibilities as a teacher become more and more important.

It is not something I take lightly and its something I am aware each of in everything I do.

All cliches and you would think they are common sense and they would be the case without having too much thought yet there will be those that will do the opposite.

Why?

Greed,no one will notice,I have enough credits that will sneak it through,I can bluff it? Hmm....whatever the excuse or whatever the reason its not right,furthermore there is never any justification in doing the wrong thing by people that actually care for you.

There is a price to pay ofcourse. It can take a lifetime to build a relationship,a lifetime to build a reputation and one second to destroy it.Is the possible gain worth the cost?

I dont think so! Make the choice,bare the responsibility.

I am so pleased for Corey and I have no doubt he will become a full time MMA fighter,this is his dream and I believe its his destiny.

Three to four years is my prediction!

Dreams can become reality with hard work and dedication...what a way to live.

Heading off today,its only a week but it seems such a long time.

As a person of habit flying is a routine killer plus I do not like being away from KMA at all.

It is all about the training though and what I can bring back for our team that is currently enjoying an unbeaten run.

Stay tuned for my travels and training as we live the Kaizan philosophy of constant & never ending improvement.

Amazing weekend

You may say the highlight of the weekend was our first title win,that was great but to be honest I am happier for Corey who trains so hard realising some major goals. Its all about my students realisng their potential...

For me last nights wedding of Zayed was of lifes significance.

He is a student and friend and if ever I have realised my role in the lives of my students it was last night.So many came up to me thanking me for the support and change I have made in the life of this amazing man.many parents also came up to me to say hello and thank me for helping their sons.

This group of boys were certainly wild and unfocused once upon a time,their lives have changed dramatically for ever.....so has mine.

I am truly humbled and I dont think I can put into words what I am feeling or thinking today.

Life is good,life is a great responsibility with all those we come into contact with.

I had never planned to train fighters,it was not even something I would have imagined of doing.So why am I doing it?

It's all about supporting my students!

Whatever their training goals are then I need to support them,it builds on their martial arts and it is my responsibility to ensure they get the best training to ensure they do not get seriously hurt and obviously we want to win.

Today Corey Nelson is making KMA history with our first title shot tonight.

We have prepared,we are ready and now its time....destiny awaits.

My first blog.

Having started journal entries for the ultimate Black Belt Test I have decided to re start them.

As a father,head of a school,martial arts organisation and supplier of martial arts, goods my duties are many and varied.

It may not be of interest to everyone but at the very least it will prove a tool for me to look back on.

Ever since I was a child I have this instinctive urge for expansion and growth.

To me,the function and duty of a quality human being is the sincere and honest development of ones potential.

Bruce Lee's quote pretty much describes who I am and my mission in life.
